Crown Jaguar F-Type Client Event at Dali Museum St Petersburg Florida Photography

The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg was host to an event put on by Crown Jaguar for guests to come and see some of its cars, including the stunning new Jaguar F-Type Coupe (see above).   This was my second time working for Crown, as I photographed the Audi A3 premiere event back in April too.  This time they hired me to photograph all the guests as they arrived in front of a F-Type.  This was my first time doing this kind of arrival portrait photography actually.  The shooting began just before sunset so early arriving guests got a colorful background like in the above portrait.  Soon night came and the background became just a few distant lights.

My setup for making guest arrival portraits a speedlight in each broody and my camera tripod mounted so I got the exact same framing and background for each shot - photo made by iPhone 6

This was my setup for all the portraits.  My camera was on a tripod so every shot was in the same framing.  I advised people to stand in front of the front wheel of the Jaguar F-Type Coupe to further insure similar photo results.  I had two speedlights each in a brolly and kept the one to frame left constant, but as night fell moved the one to frame right to also light the car more.  Unfortunately, the provided lighting for the car was not very bright at all.  I compensated for that by moving one speedlight and tweaking a few camera settings.  I ended up pleased with the results of night portraits using just two speedlights with a large background object (the car).

Some guests at the Crown Jaguar F-Type Dali Museum event arrived in costume - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 400 1/60th - tripod mounted with cable release - Strobist: SB-800 & SB-600 both in brolly

Some guests wore costumes as Halloween was just three days away.  It was interesting to look up and see who might appear before my lense each shot.  Many people joked asking if this photo was their opportunity to win the car or something like that.  I only ever replied simply, "umm, no."

The Jaguar F-Type Coupe received universal praise for its looks by everyone.  As of the time of shooting, Crown Jaguar did have this particular F-Type for sale!

It was a fun and challenging evening of photography, my favorite kind, and I got to stare at a beautiful car the whole time too.  Two Crown Jaguar employees helped make sure each guest would receive their print of the photos I made by writing down the photo number as I shot, thank you ladies!

PARC 45th Annual Black Tie Sapphire Ball at Vinoy Resort St Petersburg Florida Event Photography

Welcoming guests at PARC 45th Annual Black Tie Sapphire Ball - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/60th SB-800 hotshoe mountedPhotography often puts me into places I would otherwise never be.  Such was the case Saturday when I went to the Vinoy Resort in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida to photograph an event -- PARC 45th Annual Black Tie Sapphire Ball.  Somehow the "black tie" part eluded my mind so I was surprised to see everyone that dressed up when I arrived at the Vinoy!

Inside the Vinoy Resort showing why this was the Sapphire Ball for PARC 45th annual black tie event - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/8 ISO 200 4 sec tripod mounted with cable releasePeople were not the only ones all dressed up, the ballroom in the Vinoy Resort was as well reflecting the Sapphire Ball theme.  The chairs especially stoodout to me with their shape and striking sapphire blue covering including a sparkling diamond circle on the back.  I made this shot when I first arrived before the guests were allowed in.  Since I used a tripod and wanted to focus on the decorations, it was necessary to start with this type of shot first when photographing the event.  For sure the ballroom did not look like this by the time 11pm came around and Kool & the Gang had the place jumping!

Gayle Guyardo was an electric presence at PARC 45th Annual Black Tie Sapphire Ball event at Vinoy Resort St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D90 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/4 ISO 800 1/100th SB-600 speedlight hotshoe mountedFor many years I have kind of had a crush on Gayle Guyardo.  It was a very pleasant surprise to find out she would be presenting the winners of the Magnetic Man award at the event.  Seeing her in person only further strengthened the crush!

Mike Alstott accepts the Magnetic Man award at PARC 45th Annual Black Tie Event - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/60th SB-800 hotshoe mountedAnother surprise was seeing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers great Mike Alstott.  He still looked like he could step onto the football field and play this Sunday!  He received the first of thirteen Magnetic Man awards.

Photographing this event for PARC was exciting and a chance to have an evening I definitely would never have experienced otherwise.  Thank you Susan and Kelli!

St. Petersburg Grand Prix Gala 2014 featuring Maserati Ghibli & Ferrari

The 2014 St. Petersburg Grand Prix Gala featuring a Ferrari F430 and a Ferrari 458 Italia - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRLast Friday evening was my second year in a row receiving a media pass to the 2014 St. Petersburg Grand Prix Gala.  I got to see a number of interesting cars last year, including Lexus LFA #406.  This year, there was only one car I had not seen before, the Maserati Ghibli.

Mingling among supercars at the 2014 St. Pete Grand Prix Gala - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRMaybe it was because I got there just as the event started at 7pm, but it seemed to be a bit of a low key affair this time.  Then again I only go to be able to see supercars, so having not that many people around when I was shooting is a plus.

Guests of the 2014 St. Petersburg Grand Prix Gala with a racecar - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRWhen photographing the same event as years past, I try to find shots I did not before.  This year I went up to the open second floor to make photographs from a bird's eye view of the gala.  I am not sure why this never occurred to me last year.

I have seen this Ferrari 458 Spider many times before - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRContributing to the smaller feel to the gala this year also was that there were only three cars outside.  Last year I got to make one of my favorite images of the year, framing a row of cars with the open scissor door of a Ford GT supercar.  At least the lack of cars let me photograph the above Ferrari 458 Spider from a couple of angles, which I will feature in a future post.  However, I already saw this particular Ferrari last year and actually see it regularly driving around my neighborhood.  Is it possible for a Ferrari to become commonplace in my mind??

The stunning Maserati Ghibli at the 2014 St. Pete Grand Prix - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRThe best part of this year's gala for me, by far, was getting to see the Maserati Ghibli in person.  Immediately I thought this is a stunning car and the best looking sedan I have ever seen.  The Ghiblie previous to this was not a car I thought about much or daydreamed about.  That all changed after seeing this beautiful metallic gray Ghibli seemingly waiting for me to just come and photograph it, if not drive home with it!

2013 High School Graduation Beach Party for Conor at Caddy's Treasure Island Florida

Conor celebrating his high school graduation with friends at Caddy's Treasure Island Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 1/250th SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedFormer Morean Arts Center photography student Sue's son, Conor, graduated high school as part of the class of 2013.  She threw a graduation party out at Caddy's on Treasure Island, Florida for him and contacted me about photographing the afternoon event.  As the sign shows above, Conor is Clemson bound!

Generations celebrating a high school graduation on the beach at Treasure Island Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/7.1 ISO 200 1/400th SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedThere were multiple family generations at the party, including Conor's grandparents seen above along with his sister.  Shooting in direct afternoon sunlight is of course a challenge, so positioning everyone just so was extra important to minimize shadows as much as possible and also to try and pull some detail and color out of the background, though ultimately in the above shot I decided to convert it to black & white.

VIP EYE CARE St. Petersburg Customer Appreciation Event May 2013

VIP Eye Care boutique in St. Petersburg Florida hosts another customer appreciation event in May 2013 - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/60th SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mounted

I returned to VIP Eye Care boutique in the downtown St. Petersburg area to photograph another one of their customer appreciation events.  VIP has been my most frequent photography client, in addition to my optomology needs (contact lenses).  This time the event happened while it was still light out letting me use some of the available natural light for different looks to shots.

This is a photograph of a reflection above, with the light from my SB-600 sidelighting her as seen in the reflection.  I always like to try out new tricks when possible in order to create new event photographs for clients.

Such a purposefully overexposed shot was never possible at the other events I photographed for VIP after the sun went down.  I thought it was interesting she kept her old glasses on her head while she tried on a new pair.

I asked this sunglasses rep to hold out a pair of them as far extended as he could as I wanted to make a shot with just the sunglasses in focus and him and the background the bokeh.

VIP EYE CARE St. Petersburg Customer Appreciation Event 2012

VIP Eye Care boutique customer choosing new frames - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 1/10 ISO 800 zooming in while shutter pressed & Nikon SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedI have a long relationship with VIP EYE Care in St. Petersburg.  They have been both my source of eye care and also a loyal photography client (see here).  My lastest photography assignment for them was photographing their 2012 Customer Appreciation Celebration event.

A packed boutique at VIP Eye Care - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 1/60th ISO 800 Nikon SB-800 Speedlight @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedI roamed around photographing candids of customers checking out all the fashionable eyeglass frame choices.  I learned that choosing a new pair of glasses is quite an involved decision.  In fact, I saw several people looking whan I arrived at 6pm and only finally decided just before I left at 8pm!

This pair or that pair? - Nikon D80 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/4 ISO 800 1/100th Nikon SB-600 Speedlight @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedI also started to pick up on some insider jargon, always something I like to do.  There are letter and number code names for specific lens shapes.  Not surprisingly, new designs are carefully kept secret I also heard from one vendor.

Even babies tried new glasses - Nikon D80 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/4 ISO 800 1/100th with Nikon SB-600 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedEven a baby got to try on some new shades during the celebratory event.  I am very thankful for the continued business from VIP Eye Care and highly recommend Dr. Henri if you are looking for a very good eye doctor.

Ribbon Cutting Event at Ivy Ridge Living St. Petersburg Florida

Ribbon Cutting at Ivy Ridge Living St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 400 1/60th SB-800 @ 1/4 power on cameraPhotographing a ribbon cutting event like this one at Ivy Ridge Living (official website) in St. Petersburg creates a unique feeling inside me since I am more covering the event with photography than making set shots.  It is a free-flowing style of photography and when you have an event like this one that went indoors to outdoors several times, you really have to be on top of your settings, especially when using two cameras at once as I was.  It all makes for an exciting and challenging photography job.

Flag raising ceremony at Ivy Ridge Living in St. Petersburg - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/8 ISO 200 1/100thI also switched between using external flash on camera to using available light like in the above shot when the situation called for it, although had I left the external flash on it would have had no effect on the shot anyway.  The biggest challenge for this shot was trying to get all the crowd watching in the frame as well as the complete flagpole without infinite space to back up into (I was almost in the street).

Giving a speech at Ivy Ridge Living in St. Petersburg - Nikon D80 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/4 ISO 400 1/200thIvy Ridge Living has a very friendly staff who were all very welcoming to me and made sure I got something to eat (3 cookies, one chocolate, one cupcake, a dozen crackers) and I saw several familiar faces in the guests who attended the event as other networking event regulars.
