Ferrari 458 Spider Nero in St. Petersburg Florida Supercar Exotic Photography HDR

Ferrari 458 Spider in Nero edited in a stylized HDR way processed in Silver Efex Pro 2 in St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDRI have actually seen this Ferrari 458 Spider many times.  I first saw it at the Cars & Couture event at the Tampa Jet Center in November 2013.  Then the next week I saw it driving in my own neighborhood in St. Petersburg!  I regulary saw it after that, especially on Friday afternoons.  So I recognized it right away when I saw it at the 2014 St. Petersburg Grand Prix Gala.

Madeira Beach Florida Sunset Beach Portraits with Paula & Family

All smiles for this family on Madeira Beach during their sunset portrait session in Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 200 1/250th - Strobist: SB-800 & SB-600 @ 1/2 powerIt had been awhile since I had a sunset family beach portrait session on Madeira Beach, so it was good to meet Paula and family there recently, although once facing the Gulf of Mexico, pretty much every beach on the Pinellas peninsula looks the same!  The family-in-a-row was a new style photograph for me.  I am always looking for new ways to photograph families on the beach and adding as much variety to a family's set of shots as possible.  I like this in-a-row composition and will definitely be adding it to my already existing set of shots.

Sisters all stacked up on Madeira Beach during a fun family beach portraits session - Nikon D300 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/4 ISO 200 1/640th - natural lightAll three sisters stacked themselves up and were bookended by their parents.  I encourage families to physically interact as much as possible to add a natural and fun look to shots.  The more you come into physical contact, the better the results is typically how it goes.  Just standing stiffly side-by-side is something I try to avoid at all costs.

Global Investor Attorney Professional Business Headshot in St. Petersburg Florida with Sarah

Attorney headshot for a global investor in St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/11 ISO 200 1/160th - Strobist: SB-800 in 43" brolly to frame leftThe third attorney in as many weeks visited my home photography studio in St. Petersburg Florida for a professional business headshot.  Sarah was starting a new job and all the employees for the global investor company that hired her have their own profile page on the company's website.  There were guidelines to follow for the type of shot so that it would have a consistent look with the other headshots made previously for the rest of the staff.

The shot you see above is not the one following those guidelines of course, it is one we did for our own creative look.  After making the needed corporate headshot, I turned off one of my speedlights to introduce more dramatic shadowing and then in editing adding a digital background.  I tried the usual white and black first, but then decided to try orange.  Thankfully Sarah liked my bold orange choice as well!

1-on-1 Canon XS DSLR Photography Lesson in St. Petersburg with Sarah

Sarah with her Canon XS in Vinoy Park during our 1-on-1 DSLR photography lesson in St. Petersburg Florida

Sarah and her family not so long ago moved to Florida.  She recently also got her first DSLR.  So on Friday morning I got to introduce her to both her Canon XS and the beauty of the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront.  It was a warm spring morning with plenty of sunshine, but we started out in the shade of the Museum of Fine Arts where I explained all the photography terms Sarah will need to know in order to shoot in manual mode with her Canon.

Even for a total beginner like Sarah, by the end of the two hours using my 5-step system, she was able to use the meter to help her manually get the exposure correct for both still and moving subjects.  We even concluded the lesson with a little portrait practice.  Sarah said she has already ordered a new camera so I look forward to helping her continue to advance her photography knowledge when that comes in soon.

Crown Audi Clearwater Audi A3 Premiere Event April 2014

Crown Audi A3 premiere event in Clearwater Florida - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 5-exposure HDROn a sunny evening in Clearwater, Florida, I got to combine two of my favorite types of photography, car photography and event photography while photographing the premiere event for the Audi A3 at Crown Audi of Clearwater.  I got on site at 6pm, with still plenty of light inside the greenhouse like showroom of Crown Audi to try both HDR and natural light event shots like the one above.

There was also a loft walkway surrounding one side of the Crown Audi showroom that allowed me to get this bird's eye view of the Audi A3 premiere event.  Providing maximum variety of shots is one of my goals when photographing an event.  It is rare to be able to get a high view of an event, but it adds a very different perspective.

The last shot of the evening after all clients and potential buyers had left, was this group shot of the Crown Audi staff.  I had a very good time photographing this event and look forward to the next Audi model premiere!

Photography Tip - turn on and use the view finder's grid display on your DSLR

When people ask me for feedback on their photographs, one of the most common mistakes I see is a horizon that is not level.  This is a very simple thing to do and without it, the photograph is ruined.  To help get horizon's level, use the grid display in your DSLR's viewfinder.  Not every DSLR has this option, and not every DSLR that does has it on be default.  So look in your menus (for Nikon cameras check the Custom Settings Menu) to see if you can turn on something usually called "grid display."  Not only will it lay a grid over what you see so you can get horizons level, it also shows the framing for the rule of thirds.

For the sunset portrait above, I placed the lower third grid line right on the horizon itself, insuring a level horizon.  Also note on the upper third lines interset right at the main focus point of the subjects (their heads).  This is a composition style you will see commonly in many of my photographs, even ones without people in them.

So be sure and turn on your DSLR's grid lines in the viewfinder and get every horizon level with easy!

1-on-1 Nikon D5200 DSLR Photography Lesson in St. Petersburg with Lisa

Lisa returned to Florida this time for a 1-on-1 photography lesson with her Nikon D5200 in St. Petersburg Florida

I first met Lisa back in October of last year when she visited St. Petersburg Florida and wanted sunset portraits made.  She told me she visits Florida regularly and we stayed in touch in the meantime and thus we setup a 1-on-1 DSLR photography lesson for this morning.  She got a Nikon D5200 in December and had only been using the automatic modes for making her nature and sunset landscape shots.  Lisa did have a lot of photography knowledge though, and really wanted to learn what was essential and how to apply that to actually using her camera.  In this way I taught her my 5-step process for producing a well exposed and sharp shot in any shooting conditions shaping her existing photography knowledge into a system she can use every time she presses the shutter.

We concluded the lesson with a demonstration of how her 55-300mm lens is much, much better than her 18-55mm at producing a photograph with a shallow DoF and very nice bokeh.  It is just about choosing the right lens to produce the desired stye of shot and not forcing something to do what it is not good at.  I look forward to seeing Lisa again on her next visit to Florida and how her photography improves between now and then.
