This was my second time seeing a tarantula in New Mexico, and my third time overall seeing one in the wild (the first was in Malaysian Borneo). In the same area where I photographed this mule deer, the day started with a big spider encounter. I know I was certainly surprised to learn that there are tarantulas in New Mexico, and I was reminded of this meeting this fellow in a remote area of Ramah some 11 miles down dirt road. Where is Regina, New Mexico? It is tucked away on a small country road that eventually becomes 16 miles of dirt road that ends at a lake. It is one of my favorite areas of New Mexico. I returned there to photograph a rural land real estate property for Hemingway Land just in time to get these blue skies and scenic clouds as the forecast for the rest of the week there called for rain and snow! Original student play photographed in an intimate setting
I had a very unique opportunity to photograph the rehearsal of an original student theatre performance at the Albuquerque Academy thanks to a former client who got the parents on board to have a professional photographer (me) come in to make proper, professional theatre photographs of the performances. In the audience that evening were just the director, two parents, and myself, so it was quite an intimate setting. I got caught up in the play, while being totally focused on working with the very low available light to make the best theatre photos I could. There is nothing more challenging than shooting a moving subject in low light. I had to use a very high ISO on both my Sony mirrorless cameras, but despite that I am very happy with the final image quality results. The students were as well it would seem as the photo gallery containing the 136 images I delivered had over 14,700 views in just 4 days!
By attending 1 Million Cups in Albuquerque, New Mexico every Wednesday morning for the past year and a half I have met many people that have become photography clients. Kawtar is the latest 1MC friend to also become a photo client as she visited the JCP Home Studio wanting headshots for LinkedIn. She was open to a variety of lighting styles, background colors, and poses. The results as you can see here are my trademark modern headshot above, then below a three-fourths headshot to show off her fashion style, and then a black background headshot with feathered lighting for a bold look. On a recent car photography shoot in Santa Fe, I got to photograph four fantastic cars. This 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII is the second car I am sharing from this day of car photography in Santa Fe (the first was a Rolls-Royce Wraith). I photographed this Austin-Healey in the style for selling at auction, as I had for this client before a few month ago with his Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce. As it often is when photographing a beautiful classic car, it was an absolute pleasure photographing this Austin-Healey as there seemed to be endless angles to get stunning shots. The color of the car itself dazzled me each time I looked at it in the bright afternoon Santa Fe sunshine.
I am often out in very remote areas from late afternoon until sunset and into twilight times here in New Mexico. I love to photograph wildlife, but despite so much time out in nature, I very rarely have the opportunity to photograph large animals, like the mule deer seen here (learn about mule deer). This is in part because when I am done shooting a piece of rural land real estate, I pack up both cameras into a backpack in the back of my Jeep. So if I do happen to see a deer, or other animal, I have to stop, get out, and then get my camera ready. This always results in the animals taking off never to be seen again.
