Bring A Trailer Car Photography in Albuquerque New Mexico with 1966 Mercedes 230SL

Classic convertible Mercedes photographed in ABQ for Bring A Trailer

If I could only photograph one thing the rest of my career, cars would be fine with me! The opportunities to professionally photograph cars in Albuquerque, New Mexico are not that often, so I am always glad to get to make professional car auctions photos for Bring A Trailer, this time of a 1966 Mercedes 230SL. This classic car had both a hard top and a soft top, meaning I had to get three different series of photos of the exterior, including the top down. This is the most time consuming part of a car shoot, especially a convertible car. Joanna and her family had the car ready to go from all angles, and chose a very nice location with minimal interference from traffic and passersby. Thank you Joanna for choosing me as your car photographer and good luck with it on Bring A Trailer!

Professional Car Photography Santa Fe New Mexico 1982 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante

Aston Martin V8 Vantage with Mustang looks

I was back in Santa Fe to photograph more cars for my best car client, James. You may recall he let me drive his Rolls-Royce Wraith last time I was there doing photography for him. This time it was his 1982 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante to be photographed by my Sony a7R IV. Volante is the word Aston Martin uses for convertible. You may see some similarities in this generation V8 Vantage and the Ford Mustang. I noticed it immediately. In photographing this Aston Matin the green color showed itself or hid nearly entirely based on the angle I photographed it from. In the above photo it is hard to see, but in the aerial drone photo below it is clear.

Austin-Healey 3000 MKII Professional Car Auction Photography in Santa Fe New Mexico

Austin-Healey 3000 MKII Professional Car Auction Photography in Santa Fe New Mexico

Classic car photography is a pleasure

On a recent car photography shoot in Santa Fe, I got to photograph four fantastic cars. This 1962 Austin-Healey 3000 MKII is the second car I am sharing from this day of car photography in Santa Fe (the first was a Rolls-Royce Wraith). I photographed this Austin-Healey in the style for selling at auction, as I had for this client before a few month ago with his Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce. As it often is when photographing a beautiful classic car, it was an absolute pleasure photographing this Austin-Healey as there seemed to be endless angles to get stunning shots. The color of the car itself dazzled me each time I looked at it in the bright afternoon Santa Fe sunshine.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce Albuquerque New Mexico Car Photography

First time shooting for Bonhams Auction House in Santa Fe

I got a sudden call from Bonhams Auction House to photograph a beautiful Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce up in Santa Fe this week. This was a very nice surprise! I contacted the owner and arranged a time to bring my camera and tripod to make auction style photographs of the car. Shooting a car for auction photographs means shooting it from every single angle to start, then if it is a convertible like this Alfa Romeo is, repeating that with the top down! My favorite part of the shoot is being freed from the tripod to walk around the car with my macro lens on looking for unique details of the car. I finish with using off camera flash to make the interior shots.

Albuquerque Car Show Photography - NMCCC 35th Annual Museum Car Show

I like 50mm at car shows

At car shows it is hard to get a great shot of a complete car due to lack of space, lots of people, and lots of reflections in the sparkling paint jobs on display. That’s why I often focus on details and bring either my macro lens or my 50mm lens to show off one particular feature of a car that catches my eye. I really like the dashboards of classic cars so I always get some of those shots. This time what stood out to me most was the largest convertible hard top I have ever seen frozen in motion (see above). Or maybe it was the 1950s car seat??? (see below) What stands out the most to you from the 35th Annual NMCCC Museum Car Show?

1974 Jaguar E-Type Series III V-12 Convertible Tampa Car Photography

1974 Jaguar E-Type Series V-12 Convertible photographed for RM Auction in Tampa - Nikon D300 Nikkor 80-200mm @ f/8 ISO 200 1/200th tripod mounted with cable releaseIn June I was hired by RM Auctions to photograph a 1974 Jaguar E-type Series III V-12 Convertible.  I was not allowed to publish any of the photographs I made of the car until it went to auction.  I was happy to see that it sold for $82,500!

I was given a shotlist by RM Auctions of exactly the exterior angles that wanted photographs of.  However, with the interior I had a little more freedom for choosing details to highlight along with the required engine and ID plate shots.  Thankfully the car was in an air conditioned room to start with as I had to photograph the Jaguar around 1pm in the afternoon on a hot Florida Saturday afternoon.
