Three Years of Photographing the Porsche Monterey Classic

This was my third year in a row (see the second time) attending the Porsche Monterey Classic, an event that for me has become the unofficial start of Monterey Car Week. After already photographing it twice, the challenge this year was trying to see the same crowded dealership, service bays, and rows of Porsches in a different way. At a car show like this, I am certainly not the only person walking around with a capable camera, and with so many people packed around the cars, making photographs that feel different can be difficult. One thing to be different was bring my Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM lens and shoot it wide open at f/1.4, which gave me a different way to work close to the cars while still showing some of the environment around them. I also kept looking for foreground elements, very low viewpoints, and compositions that you would not normally see just standing next to a car at eye level. Did I find completely new angles compared to last year, or even two years ago? I do not know, but trying to find them is part of what keeps photographing the same great Car Week event interesting for me.

Contributing Through Photography

It has been nearly a year since I joined the Rotary Club of Pacific Grove, and I have enjoyed finding ways to contribute to the club and the community through photography.

I was grateful to be asked to make this year’s cover photograph and excited to see it printed on the finished event guide. With Jaguar as the featured marque, three beautiful classic Jaguars were brought together in front of Monterey County Bank on Lighthouse Avenue for the photo.

The club also generously included a quarter-page advertisement for Jason Collin Photography inside the guide.

I will also return for my second year as a judge for the car show portion of the rally. Photography, classic cars, Rotary and Pacific Grove all coming together make this an especially meaningful community project for me.

It is also a rare opportunity for owners to photograph their cars against the coastal scenery and distinctive settings of the Monterey Peninsula. Some clients need complete, accurate photography for an upcoming auction listing. Others simply want memorable photographs of a car they enjoy, recently purchased, restored, or brought to Monterey for this special week. Whether the goal is practical, personal, or a combination of both, I enjoy creating a photography plan that fits the car and the owner.

Trusted With a Special Race Car in a Remarkable Setting

I was excited to get contacted by Bonhams again to photograph another local car here in the Monterey Peninsula area that will be listed at the upcoming Laguna Seca Auction during Monterey Car Week 2026. And, it was not just a car this time, it was an actual race car! Then the location was not just any location, it was outside a private hanger at Monterey Regional Airport! This combined to allow me to make car auction photos unlike any others I had done before. It was great working with Jim, who took care of this race car for the owner for 20 years. The race car is so light, we never started it up to move it. Jim and I were able to easily push it to turn it around as needed. A new Pebble Beach location for Corvette Z06 Auction Photography

I have photographed several cars for auction for Brian of Peixoto Auto Group in the past. They were all his client’s cars (a Lexus, a Mustang . This time though, it was much more personal as his very own Corvette Z06 Convertible was to be in front of my camera! Add to that we were trying out a new location and the variables that brings, I wanted to be focused and make sure I delivered once again for Brian a set of photos that will really drive the bids up when he lists it on Bring A Trailer. The new location was a spot I had considered for a while, the large turnoff area on 17-Mile Drive called Bird Rock. There is a lot of space there, so even if it had some tourists, there would be space. Well, there were way, way more tourists there than I thought, in fact at one time 3 bus fulls!! Not only that, the local wildlife was getting in on the action. While trying to get a low angle shot, I see appear right under my camera a squirrel very much unafraid of me and looking like it wanted a snack! I said sorry buddy, no food, only a camera — haha.

Making the most of a tight location for Car Auction Photography in Watsonville

I am always excited when Brian of Peixoto Auto Group reaches out to me about photographing his latest client car. This time it was another car auction photography shoot for Cars & Bids. I drove up to Watsonville looking forward to making great shots of the white Lexus GS 350 he told me about prior to the shoot. The one challenge was going to be the location. I had seen it before, and at that time of day, the mix of sun and shadow would not really work. However, scheduling this one early in the day allowed for me to have the lighting and space to make it work. I used the barn as the backdrop for the required 360 exterior shots, then had Brian move the Lexus to another driveway spot to get cleaner backgrounds for the interior photos. I wrapped up the shoot going low angle getting some hero shots with my trusty 24mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2 lenses. In the end I was very pleased with the variety of photos I was able to make for Brian in this location and really liked the inspiration I had in photographing the very cool looking interior of this GS 350. Photographing a Custom Van while Talking to the Owner during Bring A Trailer Shoot

I really enjoyed talking with Chris, the owner of this custom van, as I photographed it for the car auction site Bring A Trailer in the Monterey, California area. This van is highly customized, having started out life as a passenger van, but now outfitted with solar, a wi-fi extender, and a shower! Chris was very helpful during the car auction photography shoot allowing me to get the best photos possible of the van, inside and out, so it can sell for the best price on Bring A Trailer. He pointed out all the custom details and helped getting the high up solar panel roof shot. Thank you Chris for choosing me as your photographer and I hope the van goes to a good new owner!
