Tyrone Mall

Canon XS 1-on-1 indoor light DSLR Photography Lesson with Suzanne St. Petersburg Florida

Suzanne relaxing after we finished our fourth 2-hour DSLR photography lesson together! When Suzanne bought her 4-pack of 1-on-1 DSLR Photography Lessons in October of last year, I did not imagine we would only have the fourth one now in June!  This, though, has allowed her to add a valuable new piece of equipment to her gear bag, a Canon 430EX II Speelite which she wanted to learn to use in indoor settings.  For that I have brought students to Tyrone Mall in the past, however, this time may have been the last time possible for it as we first got kicked out of Sears then later (thankfully at the end of the lesson) from the entire mall itself!  In my times there before no one has said anything to me.  Still, we were able to practice all I wanted to show Suzanne with regards to using the directional, or bounce, abilities of her external flash.

We even found a closed store that had tall, black velvet drapes blocking its entrance that made for a studio-like background.  After that we used a nook hidden in a hallway to see how bouncing the light off a rear wall, a side wall and straight ahead effects light on the subject (in this case me!).  I pointed out that having shadows on the face of the subject is not always bad and the headshot practice we did should hopefully allow her to make a better one of her brother-in-law, that is if he does not take advantage of my own $99 headshot service!

I enjoyed my lessons with Suzanne and perhaps we will meet again for more advanced off camera flash and digital photograph editing lessons!

DSLR Photography Lesson at Tyrone Mall St. Petersburg with Holly

Holly's notes from fourth of four lessons beside her Canon XT - photo by iPhone 4Holly's crash course in DSLR Photography finished at Tyrone Mall!  I use that location for when students want to practice shooting in an indoor shooting environment.  Plus it's air conditioned so we can have mid-afternoon lessons.  This fourth of four lessons for Holly was focused on first using her pop-up flash to get a well exposed indoor portrait given the fluorescent lighting in Sears electronics department.  Unfortunately for Sears, they do not get many customers looking to buy TVs.  Perhaps their non-existent customer service is one reason why as we were in there for twenty minutes and no one even made eye contact with us!

To wrap up everything we practiced during our four photography lessons together, Holly and I sat down for a good note taking session.  Even though I do provide students with a PDF study guide (available exclusively to paying clients), there is no substitute for writing down in your own words (and handwriting) specific settings and photography scenarios.  As you can see from Holly's notes, I also suggested what gear she should buy next (an external flash, a tripod, a telephoto lens).

Holly will be taking her Canon XT and new photography skills to Washington in a couple of weeks and I hope she is able to return with great photographs!  I look forward to seeing them.

DSLR Photography Lesson with Natasha at Tyrone Mall

Motion blur with flash practice inside Tyrone Mall during our 3rd DSLR photography lessonFor out third of four lessons Natasha (1st, 2nd) wanted to practice getting the correct white balance and exposure when photographing under indoor lights.  So we took a much welcomed break from the increasingly hot Florida spring and headed to the air conditioned oasis of Tyrone Mall in St. Petersburg.  I have used this location before for a lesson and was very pleased with the relative freedom we had to do photography within various places in the mall.  I find the TV section of Sears on the second floor particularly friendly!

Natasha is still limited to using her Canon XT 's pop-up flash, but we made the most of it eliminating early all shadows from portraits on both light and dark backgrounds.  Over the course of this third lesson I got to learn some more interesting stuff about Natasha herself.  She has second language skills and will perhaps someday work abroad for Gallup!

We ended the lesson with a little motion blur practice.  We were in far from ideal conditions to do it, but I shared with Natasha what techniques and settings I have used in the past.  The key is getting just the right shutter speed, and just the right flick of the camera as you push the shutter to create the blur, but freeze the subject.

Natasha will be helping out on a wedding photography shoot this upcoming Saturday, everybody wish her luck!

  • DSLR Photography Lesson with Jack & his Nikon D300s

DSLR Photography Lesson with Jack & his Nikon D300s right inside Tyrone Mall! When Jack contacted me for a DSLR Photography Lesson with his Nikon D300s stating he wanted to learn how to photograph concerts, since we could not go to an actual live concert to practice, I suggested we head to Tyrone Mall to learn how to shoot in low light.  What resulted was a 2-hour lesson with a certain espionage feel to it as we took our chances in the dark corners of the Sears electronics department, Spencer's and some super dark clothing store with columns out front and surfer clothes inside that did not even bother to put the name of the store out front.

In fact we were able to find low light spaces better than I had even hoped for allowing us to really practice what it would be like to shoot in a concert venue.  I basically had Jack shoot in manual mode all day as to get a sharp shot a certain minimum shutter speed had to be maintained, and we would then adjust the max aperture and max ISO as needed to get an acceptable exposure.  Jack also exclusively used his Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens.  I was impressed with its sharpness even at the max aperture of f/1.4.

However, we did get politely kicked out of a couple of the stores for taking photos inside them.  Sears did not mind at all though as we stayed there a good 20 minutes having the run of one entire aisle.  Not a single customer passed by in all that time, sadly, for Sears.

Jack now has a large set of practice photos that established aperture/shutter speed/ISO guidelines depending on if there are spotlights, movement or just diffused low light.  I hope he has a great time at the concert Wednesday night and returns with exciting photographs as well!
