When a family is willing to have real fun in portraits
Earlier in my photography career, I regularly booked family portrait shoots specializing in my own signature candid style. Now I very rarely have family portrait shoots, and typically only for clients I have done other commercial photography work for, like Barb and Dr. Norm. When they asked me if I could do a Christmas Day shoot because that was the only time their entire family would be together, I said yes mostly because I really like them and knew it would be a fun time and I could push the envelope with getting some great candids. The photos in this collection are my own personal favorites from the shoot. The siblings in particular had fun with each other! We made very good use of Highland Park from top to bottom to climbing bars to the merry-go-round!
I had my third opportunity to participate in Help-Portrait, a national day of volunteering where photographers and others meet to provide a free professional portrait, to people in their local community who otherwise may not be able to afford professional photography. My first time was back in 2011 in St. Petersburg, Florida in a space jam packed with photographers. This was my second year in a row in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but first time getting to shoot. Last year I only helped out with editing. This year with shooting it was great to know that something I helped with will be on that family’s wall for years to come.

I met Jackie a good while back at a marketing presentation. As I do with everyone I meet at presentations and networking events I checked out her website and follow up with suggestions of how my photography may help their business. Jackie was in the process of doing an entire website redesign and needed a headshot to go on it, my specialty! She visited the JCP Home Studio and we went through a variety of poses, background colors and even wardrobe changes to find a creative headshot style that worked for her new site. It was a long time coming, but Suzie was finally able to visit the JCP Home Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a headshot session! We had first talked several months ago, so I was glad when Suzie texted and said do you have any time available this morning?? Luckily I did and got the studio lights setup in a hurry! Like many clients, Suzie was not exactly thrilled at the prospect of having her photo taken, but had to. We tried a couple different lighting setups and backgrounds, before ending up with this seated position on a black background. It is my job to find the right style and look to make my headshot clients feel comfortable during the photo session and be thrilled with the results! This is what a professional headshot photographer is able to do! Thank you Suzie for visiting and being patient until we got just the right headshot for you!
I am proud to be a member of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce so when they asked me to make updated headshots for new staff members and ambassadors, I was very happy to do so. They wanted the same style and look as their previous headshots, which meant having the U.S. and New Mexico flags in the background. Having seen the outdoor location used for the old headshots, I suggested we take things indoors and control the harsh daylight that was visible in the semi-covered outdoor hallway that was used before. This allowed me to get consistent results over a long shoot without worrying about the sun changing the ambient light and adding more or less shadow to the background.
