The interior of a beautiful building in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico made for a fantastic setting for a commercial portrait shoot with Maria. She is going to be featured in an industry magazine article so I visited her one morning to make the photos for that piece. Many of the times I shoot on location, I do not know what to expect for a shooting environment, and such was the case this time. Fortunately, the open office space of what used to be the lobby of this building had several different background options. Maria had a good sense of the space also and helped with choosing the right chair for the cover photo you see above. The challenge of shooting on location, usually unknown location, is one I actually enjoy a lot as it usually results in even more creative shots. Plus, her clinic space had some of the best light for fluorescent overhead lighting I had ever seen due probably to the huge windows along the exterior wall letting in a ton of natural light to overpower what is usually brutal fluorescent. This is one of my favorite kind of photo shoots because it involves a lot of creative challenge working in (small) spaces I of course had never been in before, making photos of actual professionals doing their jobs, and basically getting to create on the fly. Sharon had a long time photographer partner for her sculptures (check out her website). She returned for a second set just three months later because she had a hair color change and wanted headshots that featured her new look. Every now and then I discover something by a happy accident, such was the case with this unique background color for Kathleen’s business headshot here at the JCP Home Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I turned up the power on the lights I had on the dark gray background, and voila, a unique background color for the headshot that I think complements Kathleen wonderfully.
