Wedding Party Event Photography at Wave Street Studios in Monterey

A Wedding Celebration at Wave Street Studios in Monterey

Returning clients, meaningful connections, and a full evening of event photography on Cannery Row

After photographing Tim’s surprise proposal to Anna along the Pacific Grove coast, I was delighted when they contacted me again about their return to the Monterey Peninsula. This time, they were bringing family and friends together for a wedding celebration at Wave Street Studios in Monterey. From candid moments and speeches to posed group portraits and one especially ambitious photograph of nearly everyone in attendance, the evening gave me the opportunity to continue documenting a story that began months earlier beside the ocean.

From a Surprise Proposal to a Wedding Celebration

You may recognize Tim and Anna from a surprise engagement drone video and photo shoot from last December (check out the drone video). They returned to the Monterey Peninsula area for their wedding party reception and asked me to be their photographer again which I gladly said yes too! Their family and friends all traveled to Monterey to celebrate with them. Tim and Anna wanted a photo with each and every person, so I had the guest list in my pocket to make sure we did! In between those group photos I searched for candid moments to capture, before making a group photo with everyone (see above). Then it was time for speeches that were very personal, very emotional, and made me emotional as well to hear them and it was truly special to be invited and included in their celebration. Tim and Anna have been so kind to me since the beginning of this photo journey together last year. Congratulations to you both, and thank you for letting me be a small part of the story.

The Best Part of Working with Returning Clients

I normally remain behind the camera throughout an event, but I was very glad to step in front of it for one photograph with Tim and Anna. Being asked to return for another milestone is one of the most meaningful compliments a client can give me.

Photography often begins with a schedule, location, and list of requested images, but the best assignments become more personal than that. You hear people’s stories, meet their families and friends, and learn what makes an occasion important to them. Thank you, Tim and Anna, for trusting me with both the beginning of your engagement and this wonderful celebration with the people closest to you.

Tim and Anna at the Center of the Celebration

Connection · Personality · Unscripted moments

Although this was photographed as an event rather than a traditional wedding-day package, Tim and Anna were naturally at the center of the story. I looked for opportunities throughout the evening to photograph them together without repeatedly interrupting their time with guests.

Some moments were gently directed, such as their portrait on the outdoor stairs. Others happened naturally, including a quiet kiss while people gathered around them. Combining those approaches creates photographs that show how the couple looked on the evening while also preserving how it felt to be there with them.

Details That Made the Evening Their Own

Guest book · Decorations · Tropical touches · Wave Street atmosphere

Event details help establish the personality of a celebration and provide context between photographs of people. Tim and Anna’s evening included colorful leis, tropical flowers, a guest book, an instant camera, personal photographs, and a welcoming sign inviting everyone to leave something behind for the newly married couple.

Photographing these elements before the evening became busy preserved the thought that went into creating the experience. The layered indoor-outdoor architecture of Wave Street Studios also provided a natural backdrop, connecting the personal details in the foreground with the couple and their arriving guests beyond them.

The Reactions That Bring an Event to Life

Reunions · Laughter · Conversations · Natural expressions

A complete event gallery should show more than the scheduled program. Much of the story happens between those moments as guests reunite, share a laugh, pose spontaneously, and react to the people around them.

I move throughout an event looking for genuine expressions without making guests feel that every interaction has become a formal photo session. These candid photographs give Tim and Anna a record not only of who attended, but also of the energy and happiness everyone brought to the celebration.

Family and Friends Together in the Garden

Immediate family · Children · Friends · Meaningful combinations

Important group photographs are most successful when they are planned efficiently while still allowing room for personality. The garden and courtyard areas at Wave Street Studios offered a relaxed setting for portraits of Tim and Anna with family members, children, and close friends.

My role is to arrange everyone clearly, work through the requested combinations, watch expressions and posture, and keep the process moving so guests can return to enjoying the event. These images often become some of the most personally valuable photographs in the final gallery because they preserve relationships that extend far beyond the evening itself.

Colorful Guest Portraits Inside Wave Street Studios

Balloon backdrop · Posed groups · A consistent portrait setting

The black curtain and colorful balloon installation created an ideal indoor portrait area. Throughout the celebration, Tim and Anna could step in with different guests for polished group photographs that shared a consistent style while still allowing every combination to feel personal.

A dedicated portrait area is especially useful during a larger event because guests quickly understand where photographs are being made. It gives the hosts a strong collection of recognizable group portraits without requiring everyone to leave the celebration or search for a new setting each time.

Words Shared With Everyone in the Room

Speeches · Reactions · Stories · Shared emotion

Speeches reveal the history and relationships behind an event. Photographing them well means documenting more than the person holding the microphone. I also watch the couple, family members, and guests for their reactions as stories are told and meaningful words are shared.

Wave Street Studios’ stone performance wall and event lighting gave this part of the evening a strong visual setting. Wider photographs established the room and audience, while closer images preserved expressions from both the speakers and the people listening.

Everyone Together in One Photograph

An elevated perspective · A complete gathering · One ambitious group portrait

One of my favorite challenges at a large event is finding a way to include as many people as possible in a single photograph. At Wave Street Studios, the venue’s multiple levels gave me the elevated perspective needed to look down into the courtyard and arrange the gathering around Tim and Anna.

Creating a photograph like this requires more than reaching a high position. Guests must be placed so faces remain visible, attention has to be gathered quickly, and the image must be made before people begin turning away or talking again. Children, adults, seated guests, and those standing farther back all had to become part of one clear composition.

The result is a photograph that shows the scale of the celebration while giving Tim and Anna a record of the community that surrounded them that evening.

Looking for an Event Photographer at Wave Street Studios?

This was my second recent event assignment at Wave Street Studios, following a lively 70th birthday celebration filled with family reunions, trivia, candid moments, and an extensive series of family portraits. This time, Tim and Anna’s wedding party allowed me to use the venue in new ways through outdoor family portraits, a dedicated indoor portrait backdrop, speeches, couple photographs, and the elevated full-group image.

Knowing a venue in advance helps an event photographer work more efficiently. I already understand the flow between the courtyard and interior, the stage and stone wall, the available upper-level viewpoints, the changing light outdoors, and several settings that can be used for group portraits.

Wave Street Studios hosts weddings, private parties, concerts, meetings, and other gatherings in its indoor-outdoor space near Cannery Row. Whether your event is a milestone birthday, wedding celebration, corporate gathering, performance, or community program, I can create a photography plan built around both the venue and the moments most important to you.
