Canon T3i 1-on-1 DSLR Photography Lesson in St. Petersburg Dali Museum with Jeannie

Jeannie in reflection during our photography lesson at the Dali Museum St. Petersburg FloridaAnother location change for our 1-on-1 DSLR Photography Lesson as Jeannie finished up her 4-pack of lessons at the new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.  The museum itself makes for many architecture photography opportunities, and the grounds feature a melting clock bench, tree with ribbon messages blowing in the wind among other interesting features.

Jeannie did get a Canon 430 EX II Speedlite since our last lesson which we used to practice candid portraits in shade, direct sunlight and diffused light.  We also went deeper into composition style and tips for framing a more flattering shot.

Over the course of her 8-hours of 1-on-1 instruction time I showed Jeannie many of the tools necessary to make successful photographs in any given shooting conditions, be they outdoors or indoors.  I look forward to seeing Jeannie again in the future for more advanced photography lessons.

New Salvador Dali Museum at Twilight with Moon

Moonrise of a purple twilight at the new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL -- this image available as fine art print & commercial license -- f/8 ISO 200 7-bracket HDR tripod mounted with cable releaseThe new Salvador Dali Museum is situated in an ideal direction for night time photography as its most notable feature, the glass wave, faces due east.  This allows for the setting Florida sun to backlight the museum, which this time resulted in a reddish-purple sky.  The extended hours on Thursday evenings allow for the lights to come on inside the museum resulting in the image seen above.  In addition, the moon was rising and waxing just enough to be visible in the early twilight.

  • Dali Museum DSLR Photography Lesson with Pam & her Canon 60D

Pam with her Canon 60D at the New Dali Museum during our 8th & final DSLR Photography LessonIn the two full years I have been teaching 1-on-1 private DSLR Photography Lessons here in the St. Petersburg area, Pam is now my most tenured student as last evening she took her eighth total lesson.  We went to my new favorite location for having a lesson, the new Salvador Dali Museum at the southern edge of the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront.  The museum offers the opportunity for architecture, macro and portrait photography, as well as night time tripod shots.

Over the course of our 16 hours of photography lesson time together Pam has learned well how to shoot in manual mode and to take control over exposure to produce a shot as she wants be it in daylight, twilight or full on night.  This is the most important skill one needs to be able to continually improve as a photographer, and to be able to start to teach oneself how to shoot better.  Therefore, I am confident Pam will be able to from this point on improve her skills on her own each time she goes out shooting.

Thanks Pam and I look forward to seeing your work in the future!

New Salvador Dali Museum St. Petersburg Florida

The new Salvador Dali Museum of St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 @ f/11 ISO 200 7-bracket HDR with partial blend of a single image on Induro CT214 tripod with cable releaseThe appearance of any new piece of architecture within a photographer's city is an opportunity to create a defining shot of it.  I am far from the first local photographer to make photos of the new Salvador Dali Museum here in St. Petersburg, Florida, and even farther from producing the defining shot.  Moris Moreno has already made those shots (view here).  When I did a search to see what photos of the museum already existed, finding and viewing Moreno's shots were humbling.

I finally photographed the new Dali Museum mostly because a commercial client wanted a shot of it to use for cross promotional purposes.  They required only a single shot which is the above.  I then went back on another occasion to use the museum grounds as the site of a DSLR Photography Lesson and made a few more shots during that time.

The above shot represents the culmination of all my HDR shooting skills, plus my increasing use of masking.  I will describe this editing technique in detail in an upcoming post.  It also helps now that I am using a professional level tripod, an Induro CT214 with Induro BDH2 ballhead.  Again, a review of those sticks will be coming soon.

The glass waterfall of the new St. Petersburg Salvador Dali Museum - Nikon D300 with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens @ f/11 ISO 200 7-bracket HDR with partial blend of a singe image on Induro CT214 tripod with cable releaseThe main architectural flair of the museum exterior is a so-called waterfall of glass flowing narrowly from the east facing roof of the building to a wider flow along ground level wrapping around the north side.  Using an HDR technique to photograph the triangular glass panels up close allows for being able to see inside the glass while keeping the sky correctly exposed.

The Mahaffey Theater (right) has a new neighbor in the Salvador Dali Museum - Nikon D300 with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 @ f/11 ISO 200 1/250th 3-shot panorama on Induro CT214 tripod with cable releaseI always liked the Mahaffey Theater's glass architecture feature, and now it is complemented with the glass waterfall of the Dali Museum.  The buildings are not exactly in a popular area of downtown St. Petersburg, more on the outskirts of it.  The only times I passed this area in the past were on exploratory cycling trips.  The roads are wide, smooth and empty in this area, great for cycling.

Melting Time bench at new Salvador Dali Museum St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 with Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens @ f/11 ISO 200 1/400th single frame handheldThe grounds of the museum before the glass waterfall contain a well landscaped garden inlcuding a melting time bench reminding one that they are still in the world of Dali.  It is details like that, an extra expense no doubt, that add a lot to the visiting experience.  I did not sit on the bench myself, for time already moves in strange ways for me.  I did not want to risk any further altered perceptions.

Handwritten note adorning a tree at the new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg Florida - Nikon D300 with Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens @ f/2.8 ISO 200 1/8000th single frame handheldAnother great feature of the Dali garden was a tree adorned with long green streamers to which people afixed handwritten notes with clothespins.  Some just tied their entrance wristbands to the streamers.  Whoever thought of this came up with a really great idea to give a visitor a sense of what other people experienced and felt on their visits.  No matter how good digital communication gets, the power of the handwritten note/letter/document just cannot be denied.  Penmanship is just as much a representation of a person's character as anything else.  When I formally go to the museum as a visitor, I will take the time to add my own handwritten remembrence.

DSLR Photography Lesson at the New Salvador Dali Museum with Golda

Golda with her new Canon 7D at the New Salvador Dali Museum in downtown St. PetersburgIt was my first time to have a DSLR Photography Lesson on the grounds of the new Salvador Dali Museum on the St. Petersburg waterfront.  I will definitely be using it again as there are ample architecture photography opportunities along with a very interesting garden to photograph, plus good locations to practice portraits as well.  This was the site of my fourth of four lessons with Golda who will in September be going on a three week mediterranean cruise!!

I actually visited the Dali Museum to photograph it for promo shots for a hotel recently, but did not get up close like I did today.  The strange design of the "waterfall" of glass looks much better close up I think than it does from afar.  I used it for the background of the above portrait of Golda.  She is standing under a tree that has long green streamers tied to it, upon which people tie their Dali ticket wristbands as well as handwritten messages and notes.  I thought it was a nice interactive touch to have as part of the greater museum exterior.

As for what we practiced during the lesson, we started with architecture shots of the building itself, then moved on to making shots with bokeh (using the streamers), transitioned to use an external flash to add fill light for portraits in the shade before ending with composing portraits to take advantage of repeating patterns.  It was a photography packed 2-hours!

I look forward to seeing Golda's mediterranean photos and especially the promised postcard she said she would send!
