NMACI 60 Year Diamond Gala Event at Sandia Resort & Casino

NMACI 60 Year Diamond Gala Event at Sandia Resort & Casino

A Diamond Gala at Sandia Resort & Casino

NMACI Diamond Gala 60th Anniversary was the first event I photographed in Sandia Resort & Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Like many award events I have photographed throughout the past 10 years, it began outside with a social hour and then moved inside to a ballroom for the presentation of the awards. Being a professional photographer in part means being able to change gears going from shooting outside in natural light at 1/500th ISO 100 of a second to dimly lit indoors using external flash and ISO 2000+.

Politicians a plenty

Then it turns out many state Senators and Representatives would be present to receive awards, as well as Lt. Governor Howie Morales. I am very experienced at photographing politicians though, from mayors to governors to Secretary of Labor and the U.S. Surgeon General!

NACWA Winter Conference 2019 Hyatt Regency Albuquerque Photography

NACWA Winter Conference 2019 Hyatt Regency Albuquerque Photography

Photos before the ceremony, great idea!

If that background above looks familiar, it’s because I just photographed another conference in the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque three months ago. This time it was the NACWA Winter Conference 2019. The conference was focused on clean and safe drinking water. I was hired to photograph the awards ceremony and a few other tangential events like 1-on-1 networking, and a reception after the awards, I liked how the organizers had me photograph the award recipients before the actual ceremony, so we could take our time and get the best shots possible, not trying to keep everyone together and looking at the camera in the split second on stage after receiving the award. You can see the lighting setup this allowed me to use below.

Engineers have fun too!

What a great time at the Albuquerque Convention Center photographing the WEEF-GEDC 2018 conference for Airbus! They hired me to photograph happenings at their booth in the vendor space focusing on their hashtag of #embracediversity and their chief engineer Jean Brice speaking at a panel and lastly their big awards dinner! This was one of the most fun events I have ever photographed. Who ever says engineers do not know how to have fun?? Thank you so much to Alina and the rest of the Airbus team for letting me be a part of this!

AFRL Awards Albuquerque New Mexico 2018

AFRL Awards Albuquerque New Mexico 2018

Air Force Research Laboratory gives out awards in ABQ!

The AFRL Awards make the second event I have photographed in the Lobo Rainforest building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The first mostly featured politicians actually, while the second was all about giving scientists and engineers awards! However, I did see some of the same people at both events. It was interesting to learn just how many patents one person can hold in science and/or engineering! I never would have thought one person would have so many, and many of the award winners had multiple patents. It was impressive. In a side note, the catering at this event featured the best vegetarian food, and best variety of vegetarian options, I have ever had in my 9 years of photographing events! Thank you Tiffany for choosing a fantastic caterer and for choosing me as your photographer for this event!

Kelly Zunkiewicz wins the 2014 Fishman Prize from TNTP at Lennard High School in Ruskin Florida Event Photography - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/60th SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mounted

It was a very early start to the week for me this morning as I was to be in Ruskin to photograph an award presentation for a high school teacher at 8am!  Kelly Zunkiewicz is a high school calculus teacher at Lennard High School in Ruskin, Florida.  She won the Fishman Prize presented by TNTP which brings with it much, much more than the trophy and framed letter you see above, it also brings $25,000!!!

A very happy Kelly Zunkiewicz receives the Fishman Prize at Lennard High School in Ruskin Florida Event Photography - Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/5.6 ISO 800 1/60th SB-800 @ 1/4 power hotshoe mountedOnly four teachers in the country win the prize so it is a great and prestigious honor.  Kelly did not know she had won until a parade of people entered her 8am calculus class and then it was all smiles after that.

St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner

The 2009 award winners.

This evening I had the pleasure of photographing the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce's annual "Outstanding Business of the year 2009 Awards Dinner."  It was a major opportunity for me to photograph inside one of the premier locations in the city, the Don CeSar Hotel.  There were several challenges in photographing this event.  As is usually the case with indoor awards events, the lighting was not being used anywhere near full power.  I had the added challenge this time of dinner plates being cleared by the wait staff and dessert being brought out while the first awards were being handed out.  I was right in the path of the kitchen doors.  Besides having to concentrate on the timing of the awards handshake, I had to make sure not to backup into someone carrying a mountainous tray of dishes or chocolate cake.

I was able to meet and have conversations with all the major players in the Chamber organization, including the president and CEO Mr. John Long, a very friendly person with a great, expressive face full of character with the type of personality that makes a photographer's job very easy.

I look forward to covering more of the Chamber's future events.
