Historic Preservation Center Ribbon Cutting at Asilomar

Event photography at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove

California State Parks and Aramark Destinations celebrated the opening of the Historic Preservation Center at Asilomar Conference Grounds with a ribbon cutting ceremony centered on preservation, education, craftsmanship, and Asilomar’s remarkable architectural legacy. The gathering brought together Asilomar team members, California State Parks representatives, Pacific Grove officials, community guests, and supporters for group portraits, recognition presentations, speakers, and the ribbon cutting itself.

Photographing the Preservation of History at Asilomar

Photographing this ribbon cutting was especially meaningful because Asilomar Conference Grounds has continued to bring me back for corporate and community events over the past two+ years. This time it was for a ribbon cutting celebrating the Historic Preservation Center where the craftsmanship of the grounds are preserved, from windows to architectural features. Before the actual ribbon cutting, I made a series of group photos and was asked if I was ok being on a ladder as they wanted a high up perspective looking down into the preservation workshop itself. I joked that I am more athletic than the average photographer so no problem to shoot from 10+ feet up! (see the BTS photo below) There were then a series of speakers from Asilomar Conference Grounds, the California State Parks system, and the mayor of Pacific Grove also all talking about the history of the place and what it means to preserve. Then it was on to the lively ribbon cutting! Thank you Alex and Crystal for continuing to choose me as your event photographer for Asilomar Conference Grounds!

Event Photography That Adapts to the Occasion

Important events do not always unfold from one convenient location or viewpoint. A photographer may need to organize a large group, work from an elevated position, photograph speakers in changing light, document formal awards, and be ready when the defining moment happens. My goal is to understand what matters to the organizer and provide complete event photography coverage that tells the full story rather than documenting only one part of the program.

Group Portraits Inside the Historic Preservation Center

Photographing the people and the preservation space together

The setting was an important part of these group photographs. Rather than place everyone against a plain wall, Asilomar requested a higher viewpoint that would show the team surrounded by the tools, worktables, materials, and equipment used inside the Historic Preservation Center. Organizing a group in an active workspace required careful positioning, but the resulting portraits document both the people responsible for the center and the environment where its preservation work will continue.

The Ribbon Cutting Moment at Asilomar

Celebrating the opening of the Historic Preservation Center

The ceremonial ribbon cutting marked the official opening of a center created to preserve the stories, craftsmanship, architecture, and cultural history that have made Asilomar distinctive for more than a century. I photographed the formal group arrangement, the cutting of the ribbon, and the spontaneous celebration that followed so Asilomar would have both essential documentary photographs and the more expressive moments surrounding the ceremony.

Recognizing the People Behind the Preservation Work

Awards and presentations during the opening ceremony

Recognition photographs provide a lasting record of the individuals and organizations whose work made an important project possible. During the ceremony, representatives from Asilomar, California State Parks, and the community were recognized for their roles in supporting the Historic Preservation Center. These photographs preserve both the presentation itself and the people connected to this new chapter at Asilomar.

Voices Celebrating Preservation and Partnership

Speakers from Asilomar, California State Parks, and Pacific Grove

Speakers reflected on the history of Asilomar, the importance of preservation, and the collaboration required to create the new center. The program included representatives from Asilomar and California State Parks, along with the mayor of Pacific Grove, City Council members, and other community leaders. A combination of close portraits, audience reactions, and wider establishing photographs helps preserve not only who spoke, but also the setting and community gathered to hear them.

Why Important Events Need Professional Photography

Five reasons to plan complete coverage before the event begins

Ribbon cuttings, conferences, corporate gatherings, awards ceremonies, and community celebrations create moments that cannot simply be recreated later. A professional event photographer provides more than photographs of the main ceremony. Complete coverage includes the location, guests, group portraits, speakers, candid interactions, recognition presentations, branding, and the defining moments that communicate why the event mattered.

Getting the Group Portrait From Above

A little extra height made a meaningful difference

The Asilomar team wanted the group photographs made from above so the portraits would include more of the Historic Preservation Center’s working environment. When they asked whether I was comfortable standing on a ladder with my camera, I joked that I was more athletic than the average photographer. The elevated position allowed me to see every person clearly while also showing the workshop, tools, materials, and equipment surrounding them. It is a good example of how listening to the client and adapting to the location can lead to a photograph that tells a much richer story.
