Street Photography Challenge
Early in my photography career when I was living in St. Petersburg, Florida, back around 2010, I used to teach a lot of photography lessons because DSLR cameras were just starting to be bought and used by non-pro-photographers, i.e. enthusiasts and hobbyists, and who the heck could figure out how to use something with a dozen buttons on it? So a couple times a week I’d spent 2 hours with someone walking the streets of St. Pete teaching them my 5-stop process for shooting in manual mode while finding interesting things to make photos of.
Fast forward to 2021, and I recently taught a couple of mirrorless camera photos lessons (DSLRs are now dead), even one walking the streets of downtown Albuquerque. I gave the photo student a challenge of make the best shot you can of a wall mural on the other side of the fence. There was no way to not have the fence in the shot really, so I wanted to see how he would frame it. I took the photo I thought was the most creative for reference, and decided to have the fence be prominent in the foreground, as a going out of focus leading line taking the viewer right to the mural in the background. What do you think? Want a photography homework assignment? Try to find this mural in downtown ABQ and make a photo of your vision of it.
