Big Sur Cabin Real Estate Photography in Palo Colorado Canyon
A remote Carmel-area cabin that required persistence, problem-solving, and thoughtful lighting to bring out its full potential.
A Remote Cabin, Access Challenges, and a Second Trip That Made the Difference
This was one of those real estate shoots where the challenges started as soon as I got to the front door, in particular that the entrance codes provided did not work! As the cabin is tucked deep into Palo Colorado Canyon in the Big Sur area, there was no cell signal, so I had to drive out to get other codes, but those did not work either! Rather than walk away empty-handed, I focused on capturing the exterior images so the client had at least something to work with. Weeks later, after reconnecting with the San Diego-based real estate agents, I returned to the property to complete the interior photography.
Finding a way into the cabin yet again required ingenuity as the new access instructions still were not working! The cabin itself was modest and naturally quite dark, so using a combo of off-camera lighting, careful composition, and exact camera settings I was still able to create images that feel bright, open, and inviting—without relying on artificial or AI-generated edits. I also spent time preparing the space as best as possible to make it presentable for listing photos.
The client put a lot of trust in me to handle this remotely, and in the end was extremely appreciative of the extra effort and the final result.
Real Estate Photography That Solves Problems, Not Creates Them
Not every listing is straightforward. Remote locations, access issues, and difficult interiors are exactly where experience matters. The goal is always the same: deliver strong, usable images no matter what the situation looks like at the start.
Interior Photography
Bringing Light and Space into a Dark Cabin Interior
The interior of this cabin presented a classic challenge—limited natural light, darker materials, and tight spaces. Rather than letting the rooms feel dim or cramped, I used a combination of off-camera lighting and in-camera techniques to naturally brighten the space while maintaining a realistic look. The goal was not to misrepresent the property, but to present it at its absolute best—clean, inviting, and full of potential for prospective buyers.
Exterior Photography
Capturing the Setting and Character of a Big Sur Property
The exterior of the property was surrounded by towering trees in a peaceful, secluded setting. On my first visit—despite access issues—I made sure to capture these exterior images so the listing could still move forward. The goal here was to highlight not just the structure itself, but the environment and sense of escape that make properties like this so appealing.
Going Above and Beyond for Every Listing
This shoot required multiple trips, problem-solving in a remote location, preparing the space, and working through access issues that would have stopped most photographers before the job even began. Instead of walking away, I made sure the client ended up with a complete set of images they could confidently use to market the property.
That level of persistence and attention to detail is what separates a standard shoot from a successful one.
