Sunset Beach St. Petersburg Candid Family Portrait Photography

Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 @ f/5.6 ISO 200 1/100th Strobist: SB-800 to frame left SB-600 to frame rightThe sky over the Gulf of Mexico at Sunset Beach, Treasure Island, St. Petersburg was completely clear for the candid family beach portrait photography session with Vickie and her family.  For the main sunset portrait, I had the new idea to have the parents hold their children rather than the kids standing beside their parents.  Although everyone was standing still, I thought it added a sense of motion and gave the portrait a certain type of dynamic and sense of inertia.

Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 @ f/5.6 ISO 200 1/100th Strobist: SB-800 to frame left & SB-600 to frame rightThe forehead-to-forehead pose was Vickie's idea.  I liked how this photograph turned out so much that it was my third favorite photograph of 2010.  The mother and daughter I feel form a slight heart shape together and with their faces hidden the viewer is left to imagine their emotions.  Leaving things to the imagination is a key element in many of my best photographs and one of my signature styles.  My thanks to Vickie for this great pose idea.

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8D @ f/4 ISO 200 1/1250th natural lightIf the family has two children, I like the dad to hold both children in his arms.  I like to think it will provide a memory for the children of how strong their father was and how small they once were to be able to fit in the bend of his arm.  With the sun setting and the great Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8D lens on my Nikon D300, natural light provided just the side-lighting look I wanted.

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8D @ f/4 ISO 200 1/1250th natural lightNothing like a little frozen motion for an action candid shot.  This looked like so much fun I wished I was not close to 2-spins so that I could be tossed high into the air too!  Perhaps if I ever get to meet a mountain gorilla my wish could come true.

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D @ f/2.8 ISO 200 1/4000th natural lightThis type of candid portrait is my favorite type for children.  One may think the photo is a fail since the boy is not looking into the lens, but I actually think it makes the photo because it adds his own character to the shot, especially with the lip bite as well.  His sister smiles perfectly.  Each person in the shot has her/his own dynamic.  Perhaps in twenty years she will rib him and say, "what were you looking at?"

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8D @ f/4 ISO 200 1/1000th natural lightThe instructions I give for the "walking down the beach" shot, which is one of my favorite kind of family beach shot, is for the family to try and stay in the same plane when walking, walk at a good pace, try not to swing your arms too much or too high, and keep some space between each person (to prevent arm overlap).  Vickie and her family got it all down perfectly on the first take.

Big Family Candid Beach Portraits at Tradewinds Resort St. Petersburg

A Charlie's Angels inspired portrait on the beach at Tradewinds Resort St. Petersburg

Marillee's big family were all going to be in the same spot, St. Petersburg, Florida for just a few days.  Fortunately my schedule matched theirs and we were able to meet at the Tradewinds Resort for my biggest to date candid family beach portrait photography session.  There were eleven immediate family members and a few other friends of the family who lived locally as well.  Only one of these people was not yet old enough to drive, so managing so many people in a finite time (before sunset) to produce the best possible candid portraits was still a challenge, but not an overwhelming one.

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8D lens natural lightAs is usually the case, the family only had a few requests, and left all the other shots up to me.  One request they did have was the above photograph of all of them, save for the baby, wearing their sunglasses.

The ever popular nowadays group jumping portrait on Tradewinds Resort beachWhile I had them all standing next to each other along the water they were very up for my suggestion of a group jumping shot.  However, getting all 10 people to jump at the same time was only a modestly successful venture due to differences in vertical leap and desire to touch the sky!

Nikon D300 Nikkor AF ED 80-200mm f/2.8 natural light processing in Color Efex Pro 3 (tonal contrast filter)The action shots continued as I asked the brothers to show me who had the fastest forty time.  I would judge the results in this photograph to be unofficial as a good bit of tom-foolery was present at the start of the race, which is not unexpected in any form of brotherly competition.

Portrait Tip: have a shy person engage with the others in the portrait instead of stiffly looking into the cameraWhile the brothers recovered from their sprints, I had the matriarch and patriarch of the family take up with the apple of their eyes, their lone precocious grandson.  Note the tip in the footnote of the photo.  If some one cannot just relax looking into the lens, the next best thing I find is to have them interact with the others in the portrait to at least get a natural expression, if not their entire face showing.

Nikon D300 Tamron XR Di II 17-50mm f/2.8 lens B&W processing in Silver Efex ProOne final shot of the entire family in a panorama crop.  If you want to be able to see the faces of 11 people better in a group shot, cropping to a panorama orientation does the trick.  I also think it is very pleasing for a portrait to only include the upper torsos of a group of people.

Photo Tip #2 -- Use the youngest as a prop! He won't mind and everyone else will enjoy it.If you cannot get a toddler to stand still, well then hold him up!  There was just no getting all the ladies in the family to be composed and the family toddler as well.  So I asked if they could all hold him together, which resulted in lots of laughs for everyone involved and to me a quintessential candid portrait.

Holiday Photo Card Portraits with Caroline & Evan in St Petersburg

Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 1/250th Strobist: SB-800 on light stand to frame left @ 1/2 powerWhen another professional photographer asks to hire you to take their portrait, it is flattering . . . and also makes you nervous as you know they know what exactly a good photograph is.  So when local St. Petersburg friend and colleague Caroline of CSE Photography asked me to photograph her, her husband and their dogs for their holiday photo cards, I was both excited and a bit worried about doing a job good another to satisfy another pro.

The dip! -- Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/11 ISO 200 1/250th Strobist: SB-800 to left SB-600 to rightActually I was not really worried because I have known Caroline (and Evan) for a little while now and they are both super friendly.  We have had meetings and shared photography business tips and ideas.  You might be surprised how freely professional photographers share information despite being competitors.  For me the reasons are because it is a great way to get real world tips, and there is no real concern about direct competition because no one, or dozen, photographers can possibly photograph every wedding in the city!

The shot above I was most excited to make as Caroline said she and Evan would properly demonstrate "the dip."  Everyone take note!

Nikon D300 Tamron 17-50mm @ f/6.3 ISO 200 1/160th Strobist: SB-800 on light stand to frame leftMy whistling ability came in handy once they brought their dogs to the park.  As often happens with photographing dogs, they were very much interested in everything except looking at the camera.  A sharp whistle got their attention as I had my Nikon ready, snap, everyone looking into the lens!  Really though they were good girls.  It would have been much harder to try and wrangle my own dog, Kiki, for a portrait like that!

Nikon D300 Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D @ f/5 ISO 200 1/200th Strobist: SB-800 on light stand to frame leftThe above shot was a bit of pre-visualization.  I wanted to use the sun as a natural backlight for this portrait.  It took a bit of fiddling with the settings to get Caroline and Evan in an acceptable exposure while keeping the highlights of the sun in the background.  I needed to keep a 1/200th shutter speed to insure a sharp shot and did not want to use anything but the minimum ISO, so I only adjust the aperture on my D300 and the power coming out of the SB-800 speedlight.

Nikon D300 Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D @ f/11 ISO 200 1/250th Strobist: SB-800 to left SB-600 to rightCaroline really liked Even in his black jacket.  I liked the idea of Evan leaning coolly against the palm tree.  Put those two things together, plus processing in Silver Efex Pro, and the results are a kind of (in my mind) throwback "fly boy" portrait.  In case you were wondering what were the settings to use when shooting in bright afternoon sunlight, I often use:  f/11 ISO 200 (D300's minimum) 1/250th (manual exposure mode) and set my speedlights to 1/2 power (manual mode).

I had a lot of fun during this portrait session.  It is always nice to be able to photograph people you know.  It definitely adds something.  There is a certain comfort level and a different kind of creative feeling that must come only from having previously known someone.  Thanks again Caroline, Evan and the pups!
