This morning's special candid portrait session was at one of my usual shooting locations: The University of Tampa. However, since I love bokeh so much it almost does not matter where the session is actually held. The shoot was later in the morning than I recommend, but the client requested a later start time since her son does not wake up so early, and neither do I, so I was glad for the extra sleep after the long evening at the Business Showcase the day before.
The above shot was a requested "nose-to-nose" shot. It was a fairly difficult shot to get since there are quite a few variables in such a shot: both subjects' eyes open, eye contact made, noses touching just the right amount, and flash location. This was the third attempt. I like it because all the variables are met and the mother's hand touching her son's chin, I feel, adds tenderness to the shot.
THE SETUP:
- Nikon D300 handheld
- Nikkor AF-S 105mm VR micro F2.8G @ f/5.6
- Nikon Speedlight SB-600 tripod mounted to frame left & above
I was a bit wedged in between the chair the boy was sitting in and the guard rail on the front porch of the Plant Building. Just enough space though to get the subjects in frame.
