A Family Portrait Session at Lover’s Point, Pacific Grove
From Rotary Club Connections to Family Portraits at Lover’s Point Park
Even though I have photographed dozens of families in the past, mostly on the west coast beaches of Florida, since pivoting to focus on commercial photography 12+ years ago, I still have the occasional family portrait session come up. This family portrait photo shoot at Lover’s Point Park in Pacific Grove, California came about through me joining the Pacific Grove Rotary Club last year, which is were I first met Richard. We went on to judge a car show together put on by the Rotary Club. Since then we see each other every 2 weeks for the Rotary Club luncheon and have become friends. I have helped him with photo prints of existing photos of his a couple of times. This time, he asked me to make new photos of him and his wife Beth and their dog Gino, and then help them with designing their Christmas card (see below) using the photos we made together. I enjoyed the experience of making family portraits again, and getting to know Richard even better outside of the monthly Rotary Club events. Thank you Richard and Beth and Gino!
A Non-Traditional Approach to Family Portrait Photography
Even though family portraits are not my primary focus day to day, I bring a very different perspective to them because of my background in commercial photography. Years of working with off-camera lighting, thoughtful composition, and real collaboration allow me to create family portraits that feel natural, polished, and intentional rather than posed or formulaic. If you are looking for a family portrait photographer in Pacific Grove or across the Monterey Peninsula who values storytelling, connection, and a relaxed experience, I may be exactly the right fit. These sessions are ideal for families who want something a little different—images that feel like them, in places that actually matter to them.

A Relaxed Approach to Family Portraits
Even though this was a family portrait session, the approach was very similar to how I photograph people for branding and editorial work. The focus was on comfort, connection, and letting moments develop naturally. Lover’s Point offered a beautiful but understated backdrop, and the stone wall gave us a natural anchor that kept everything feeling grounded and authentic. The result is a set of images that feel timeless.
From Photo Session to Finished Gifts

The Experience Does Not End When the Camera Is Put Away
One of the parts of my work that clients often appreciate most happens after the photo shoot. A week after their session at Lover’s Point Park, Richard and Beth came back to my Pacific Grove photo studio to design their 2026 Christmas card and select framed prints as gifts for family members. Sitting together in the studio, we reviewed their favorite images on a large, wall-mounted screen and talked through how each photo would live beyond the digital file — as a card mailed to loved ones or as a framed print displayed in a home.
This part of the process is intentionally relaxed and collaborative. There is no pressure, no rushing, and no guessing how something will look once printed. Clients can see scale, crop, layout, and design clearly before making decisions, which makes the final result feel intentional rather than rushed or generic.
Professional Printing, Studio Guidance, and No Extra Fees
All of my clients are invited to use this in-studio design and print selection service at no additional charge. I work with a professional print lab that is only available to photographers, ensuring consistent color, archival materials, and exceptional build quality for both prints and frames. Clients also have the option to ship finished prints directly to my studio at no cost, allowing me to inspect everything before pickup.
Whether it is a custom holiday card, a framed print for a family member, or artwork for your own home, this process ensures that the final piece looks as good in person as it did on screen. For many clients, this guidance and access to professional printing is just as valuable as the photo session itself — and it is something I am always happy to provide.
Family Portrait Photography on the Monterey Peninsula
Family portraits are not just about capturing how everyone looks in a single moment. They are about preserving connection, personality, and a sense of place. Whether photographed at Lover’s Point, along the Pacific Grove coastline, or elsewhere on the Monterey Peninsula, I approach family portraits with the same level of care, creativity, and technical precision that defines my commercial work. From thoughtful composition and natural expressions to optional off-camera lighting and guided print design afterward, my goal is to create images that feel genuine and meaningful, and that are meant to live on walls, not just screens.
If you are looking for family portrait photography in Pacific Grove or the greater Monterey area that goes beyond a quick session and includes real collaboration, professional guidance, and finished artwork support, I would be glad to help you create something lasting.
